Documenting art and identity in formation: An arts agent's story

Yu Benedict Tan, an arts management practitioner since 2001, conceptualised and organised art programmes such as the PASSIONOVA Arts Market in 2004 in the aim to showcase the arts and crafts of art students and the France + Singapore New Generation Artists competition and exhibition which ran for consecutively three years from 2009 – 2011. He begun his career in the arts by working on handling logistics such as setting up exhibitions and coordinating transportation of art works from 2002 to 2004, and has till date played an important role in the making of more than 70 visual arts exhibitions.

Benedict graduated from LASALLE College of the Arts in 2006 with a Bachelor Degree in Arts Management and thereafter joined the visual arts department in Esplanade Theatres on the Bay as a Festival Assistant. After which, he was employed by a commercial art agent as a Project Coordinator under the brand of art-management.com which ran art events in a string of art cafes and other art spaces such as the Art House, MICA building and Ambassador Residences. A year later, Benedict progressed his presence in the arts industry, joined the Alliance Française de Singapour as a Gallery Manager. At the Alliance he was applauded to represent artists from over the world such as France, UK, India, China, Indonesia and many from Singapore as well as his strengths in creating exhibition designs in shows such Afterlife of the Tang Nobility, a Tang Dynasty artifact exhibition and Kaleidoscope, an art deco furniture and prints show.

He is an advocate for new media arts and new media platforms to promote arts and was appointed as a member of the advisory committee of Arts Portal that launched in 2013 as the first mobile app based virtual arts space. Before this, he collaborated and provided consultation to Oluss Studio in the development of two mobile gaming applications equipped with each a virtual art gallery that featured Singaporean artists.

This blog is created with the intention to casually yet seriously document key and important projects that Benedict has been involved in as well as articles he has written in an effort to materialise the current moulding of Singapore and Asian art and identity.
